For new potential fans of “The Office,” the DVD set of the break-out second season is a must-see. Start recording the third season now (premieres Sept. 21) and save those episodes, but don’t watch them until you’ve watched the complete second season.

For devotees like myself, the DVD set is a just reward for loyal viewing. The show came into its own this year. I had watched fitfully until the stretch of episodes starting with “The Injury,” “The Secret,” and “The Carpet” hooked me for good. I am now going back to watch the whole season again and the shows hold up very well upon repeated viewing.

Strengths of the season: Steve Carell gets the award for Most Improved Characterization. It took about a dozen episodes (starting with 6 in the first season) for the show to settle on a tone for Carell’s incompetent boss. For a while I wasn’t sure what to make of him, which kept me from getting attached to the show. But this season he evolved from a mean jerk to a clueless, lonely man who really just wants everybody to be his friend. While the Michael Scott character still has plenty of totally inappropriate behavior and tons of cringe-worthy moments, his core of pathos and vulnerability humanizes him. I am even rooting for him to find love with Carol or Jan. As we saw this season, the fumbling results will surely be funny.

Now that Carell provides a solid anchor for the cast, the rest of the supporting actors can truly come into their own. From Rainn Wilson’s complete dedication to the serious idiocy of office suck-up Dwight Schrute, to the smaller roles of wild-card Creed and eternally suffering temp Ryan, the ensemble has truly gelled.

And of course the slow-motion unfolding of Jim & Pam’s romance provided the heart of the show throughout the season. Just about anyone over the age of 30 has been either Jim, Pam, or Roy at sometime in their life, and the bittersweet agony of the whole journey provided the summer’s biggest cliffhanger. In my online poll to find the “Top Mom Crushes,” both John Krasinski and Steve Carell have been nominated.

Finally, the DVD extras are truly great. The deleted scenes for each episode range from about 4 to 11 minutes and they are really funny. The discipline of 22 minutes works in the show’s favor keep the stories tight, but the extra scenes are a worthy bonus for true fans.

This is a fantastic show, and a great DVD set. Even if you didn’t watch the British version of the show (which I could never quite get into) give the American version of “The Office” a chance. What separates “The Office” from any other current “sitcom” is that much of the humor comes from what is left unsaid, rather than having a barrage of lame one-liners hitting viewers over the head. “The Office” is absurd, laugh-out-loud comedy with a heart–and if you are part of a couple, it’s appointment TV that you can both love.

Warning: Some spoilers

Of all the half-hour comedy shows that I’ve ever seen, THE OFFICE is the one that I would have thought the least likely to be brilliant. The BBC original version of the show was a thing of genius. Trying to do an American version of it seemed to me to be akin to Andy Warhol doing a remake of Picasso’s “Guernica.” Watching the show in Season One I was astonished that it was not only not bad, but that it was in fact very good. Amazingly, in Season Two it became something utterly brilliant. Although I was a huge fan of the original show, I have to confess that the American show is every bit as good as the British original. It is the finest American adaptation of a British show since ALL IN THE FAMILY remade TIL DEATH DO US PART.

Two things make this a great show: the writing, which is persistently brilliant (though obviously aided by a great deal of improvisation on the set), and the cast, which is both talented and very deep. Steve Carrell at first was not completely at home in the role, failing to strike the right balance between an utter absurdity and being likable nonetheless. Ricky Gervais managed to get this perfect from the beginning and he was always someone viewers would find to be the world’s biggest idiot while nonetheless inwardly rooting for things to work out for him. At first, Carrell was incredibly funny in the role, but he was not someone to feel much sympathy for. But as Season Two went on and some of his own insecurities were revealed, we came to understand that he was more aware of his own basic unlikability than his persistent bluster made clear. By the end of the season he was near perfect in the role and he fully deserved the Golden Globe he won. Nearly as many laughs were generated by his brown-nosing sycophant Dwight, played brilliantly by Rainn Wilson. But the heart of the show in Season Two was the obvious and endearing attraction between Pam (sweetly played by Jenna Fischer), who is engaged to marry a guy who works in the warehouse, and Jim Halpert (winningly played by Jon Krasinski). If the antics of Michael Scott dominated each individual episode, the non-romance between Jim and Pam dominated the season as a whole. The climax of the entire season comes in the final episode, when Jim confesses his love for Pam and they kiss, just before he transfers to the Stamford, Connecticut branch of the company. I have rarely seen so much anticipation over a summer for the start of a new season for a half-hour show as I did this one, with an army of fans of the show wondering how Pam and Jim would pick up in Season Three.

Although THE OFFICE started off fine in its first season, it got better and better throughout Season Two. Because it has already run for more episodes than the British original, it is beginning to exploit one advantage it has over it: the ability to develop more fully minor characters. In the second half of the season especially a number of characters who initially just took up space became known entities, such as Kelly, the Indian girl who is fixated on getting married and immediately having babies on the one hand and doing this with her coworker Ryan on the other. Or Creed, about whom we learn more and more odd details as the season goes along, culminating in the season finale where he informs us that he likes to steal things. (Creed, by the way, is played by Creed Bratton, who was a rock star in the sixties as lead guitarist for the famous group the Grassroots, which had a string of huge hits including “Midnight Confession” and “Let’s Live for Today.”) As we get to know the various members of the office and pick up on the intricate interplay between the various personalities, the show becomes more and more irresistible.

THE OFFICE follows a trend in the best American television comedy to move away from the situation comedies that has long dominated our comedy. Most shows have been shot in front of a live studio audience, filmed with three or more cameras, performing each scene more than once in order to have alternate takes for the final version. But wonderfully innovative shows like MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, and SCRUBS has abandoned the situation comedy format and opted for a more realistic format. Like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, THE OFFICE takes on a documentary style, shooting the film on hand held video, which not only gives the show a more spontaneous feel, but avoids the expensive camera and lighting set ups that adds a lot of time to shooting. I think this is a great trend and I personally would love to see the live audience situation comedy disappear entirely.

With the unfortunate demise of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (I still haven’t recovered from that shock of its disappearance), THE OFFICE becomes the finest and most innovative comedy on American television (its only rival for the title being SCRUBS). There are still a few diehard fans of the BBC series that won’t give this one a try. They should. It not only does great honor to the British show, it has become an absolutely wonderful show in its own right.

If you’ve seen Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, then you know the entire plot of Scary Movie. That’s okay, though, because this is a parody, and it helps to know the story in order to be able to get the jokes. No, the biggest surprise here is not the story as much as the amount of full-frontal male nudity. Really, in addition to all the dick jokes (and the ass jokes and fart jokes), there’s a couple of shots of the male member, one of which is erect and used as a weapon. Scary Movie somehow ended up with an R rating, which in a sense is groundbreaking; perhaps our ratings board is loosening up after all.

But is it funny? That’s the most important qustion, and the answer to that is yes. In the vein of Airplane!, with a dash of the Farrelly brothers, Scary Movie keeps throwing jokes at you one after another. The law of averages says some of them have to hit, and enough of them do to keep the movie entertaining. Unlike the makers of Airplane!, however, the Wayans brothers aren’t making this movie out of a love of the genre, and unlike the Farrelly brothers, they don’t make fun of retarded people with any sort of respect, so the humor throughout feels a lot uglier. Still, there are enough funny scenes in Scary Movie to make the viewing experience worthwhile. Special credit must go to Lochlyn Munro as Greg, the over-the-top jock, who steals the movie up until the time he’s gotta die.–Andy Spletzer

The House of the Spirits is a generational tale of life among the ruling class in a South American country, as adapted from the Isabel Allende novel, but the political realities coexist very uneasily with the magical realism in this Bille August film. The star power alone (Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Antonio Banderas, Vanessa Redgrave, and Armin Muller-Stahl) should have cranked it up a few notches, but that’s not the case. Irons is appropriately crul as the ambitious man who achieves wealth and makes everyone around him miserable and Streep is luminous, but it’s slow and ponderous all the way. –Marshall Fine

The movie is truly extraordinary! (And it`s an extended edition!) Anyone who liked the first two will literally topple in treasure with this one! I assume that even if you didn’t study the first two, you will like this one because of what it talks about. This movie is about something we all go through: saying good-bye to our friends after high school. Addiotionally, it’s nice to glance ateen movie that doesn’t revolve around sex, drugs, violence, and profanity.

The East High Wildcats choose to set on their final present together at their school: a musical about their twelfth grade experience. It’ll be a radiant recent musical because, for once, they won’t have to play a character - they’ll be playing themselves! But due to her improbable intelligence, Gabriella, the female protagonist, is offered to skip her senior year in high school and go to straight onto college moral away. Will she score Standard’s offer, leaving her friends, boyfriend, and the musical late? Will Troy, the male protagonist, chose to continue with basketball or will he chose a career than involves acting? Will Sharpay obtain a scholarship to Modern York’s Julliard University of Performing Arts or will her brother? Will Ryan and Kelsi glean upright care for? Gather out in this captivating conclusion to one of the world’s greatest film series! The only valid thing recently produced by the screwed-up Disney Channel! Yes I dislike Disney Channel, Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, Jonas Brothers, and all of the other contaminated teen shows they’ve decided to save on a children’s channel. But High School Musical is different. It teaches both kids and teens a famous lesson and it allows adults to revisit their past. The region is actually relevant to what many people feel and…it’s a teenage musical! You don’t behold something like that everyday! Fair watching Troy and Gabriella do a fine waltz is reason enough to rob this film. Also, the extinct fashioned music at the demolish proves that rap, hip hop, and pop isn’t always what you’ll peer in a teenage film.

The songs are as current, catchy, and astonishing as they are visually elegant! During “Wail,” the turning walls that picture Troy’s confusion are spectacular! The disappearing pictures on the wall in Gabriella’s solo “Scurry Away” were really quite dismal. The Statue of Liberty that shoots fireworks out of its head in “I Want It All” is improbable. The sets in “A Night To Remember” will leave you with your mouth wide begin. “Proper Here Accurate Now,” “Can I Have This Dance,” and “Unprejudiced Wanna Be With You” are three improbable romance songs. And, of course, Troy and Chad turning into diminutive boys in “The Boys Are Benefit” was really cute. That reminds, “Fair Here Apt Now” and “The Boys Are Help” are so of my favorites because of what they talk about: not wanting to grow up. Anyway, n case you forgot or are too indolent to read the customer reviews for the HSM3 soundtrack, here are the songs:

Buy,Download, Or Stream High School Musical 3: Senior Year! Click Here

    1. “Now Or Never” - Troy and the Wildcats basketball team

    2. “Fair Here, Lawful Now” - Troy and Gabriella

    3. “I Want It All” - Sharpay and Ryan [A Correct BROADWAY SONG!]

    4. “Can I Have This Dance? (Version I) ” - Troy and Gabriella

    5. “A Night To Remember” - cast!

    6. “Unprejudiced Wanna Be With You” - Ryan & Kelsi, Troy & Gabriella

    7. “The Boys Are Abet” - Troy and Chad

    8. “Fling Away” - Gasbriella

    9. “Wail” - Troy

    10. “Can I Have This Dance? (Version II) ” - Troy and Gabriella

    11. “Senior Year Spring Musical” ***made up of reprises of NOW OR NEVER (Chad, the Wildcats basket team, cheerleaders), I WANT IT ALL (Ryan), Fair WANNA BE WITH YOU (Sharpay & Jimmy, and later Troy and Gabriella), and A Night To Remember (Sharpay vs. Tiara), as well as a unique song: Last Chance (Ryan and Kelsi) ***

    12. “We’re All In This Together” - cast!

    13. “High School Musical” - cast!

    14. “Unprejudiced Getting Started” - during the kill credits, winner of the Rep In The Record ABC7 contest

By the design, during the “I Want It All,” you actually witness Gabriella The Maid a bit more than you did in the theaters because you stare that allotment of the song in a different camera angle than you did in theaters. That also lets you explore an important-looking lady giving Ryan a newspaper with him and Sharpay on the hide. This is not due to the extended edition thing because the song is the same length, but, like I said, the camera angle is different so you ogle more things.

The special features on this Blu-ray are freakin’ icy! Even though it’s a single disc release, it has the dependable same negate found on the Two-Disc release, plus more! These are the Special Features (the last two aren’t found on the two-disc release) .

    – Extended Version Of The Movie

    – Optional Philosophize Along Version

    – Bloopers

    – Deleted Scenes

    – “Cast Goodbyes” feature

    – “Night Of Nights” feature

    – “It’s All In The Dress” feature

    – “Senior Awards” feature

    – Current Cast Profiles

In addition, unbiased like in the Two-Disc release, you can download a digital copy of the movie. And as if that weren’t enough, it comes with the first disc of the Two-Disc Edition!!!!! Now you can search for the movie practically anywhere because you have the regular version as well as the Blu-ray version!!!! What do you know, it is a two disc after all. ^_^

An toothsome, fun film courtesy of a bigger budget, better production, stage and lighting, this is the best “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” film of the three. The transfer on to Blu-ray is apt in portray and audio quality and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment really went all out with this “Deluxe Extended Edition” release.

With the previous two films debuting on the Disney Channel, “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” was the first of the three films to go on the sizable mask and eventually having the largest opening weekend for a musical film ever earning $42 million in North America and $40 million overseas in its first three days of release. Opening at #1 and also having solid sales with its musical soundtrack.

One can say it’s the typical teenage angst that we saw from the first previous two films but what makes “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” so great better is the higher production values. The film features one of the most ambitious sets, choreography, costume and stage designs, lighting and uses of color in a musical.

And because the higher production values, it definitely heightens the enjoyability of the film. From performances in the basketball court, outdoors at a college campus, a junkyard and more, the cinematography is really solid.

And of course, everything translates well on Blu-ray.

    VIDEO & AUDIO:

“HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” is featured in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1) and the describe quality is agreeable. In one musical segment titled “I Want it All” featuring Sharpay and her twin brother Ryan Evans, I was fair amazed by the sudden shifts of color and how fantastic it looked. The colors were fair vibrant and after watching the film on Blu-ray, I had to peruse how different the experience of watching it on Blu-ray versus DVD. The Blu-ray colors honest were astounding and on DVD, it was obedient but not in the same vibrancy as the Blu-ray. This segment objective was a broad example of noble lustrous choices on costume invent and region form and there are many instances that really stick out in the film. Even in the non-musical segments, the outdoor and indoor segments were shimmering and looked mammoth on Blu-ray.

As for the audio, the audio quality is of course music-driven and music really comes alive with the English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. I did look a few instances of rear channels being venerable during scenes with a lot of people but in most piece, the film is dialogue and music driven and overall audio quality is also mammoth.

So, recount and audio quality for “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” is fabulous!

    SPECIAL FEATURES:

And this is probably where Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment really went all out in this DELUXE EXTENDED EDITION release. You gather a total of three discs, the first being the Blu-ray which is the extended version of the movie, the second being the Digital Copy and the third being the DVD copy of the extended edition movie. Having not watched the normal theatrical version, I do know that the new had 112 minutes and this extended version is 117 minutes long.

As for special features, this is where the Blu-ray shines. Included are:

    * Senior Awards - The crew felt that with the talent graduating from “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL”, a yearbook was created with photos from show but also the cast having the ability to vote for “Best Dressed”, “Best Comedian”, “Best Couple”, etc.

    * Recent Cast Profiles - This segment features the passing of the torch to the original characters: Matt Prokop (Jimmie Zara), Justin Martin (Donny Dion) and Jemma McKenzie-Brown (Tiara Gold) . With clips from their video reports, from beginning when they first started and eventually making friends with the recent cast and interviews about the three becoming piece of the approved trilogy.

    * Disney Live Network - The ability to include your photos into the “EAST HIGH SCHOOL” yearbook ala BD-Live and more.

    * Cast Goodbyes - Interviews with the cast and Director Kenny Ortega and everyone saying goodbye and being emotional during the final shot and considerable more. The cast reflecting on their last chance to be with each other as a group.

    * Deleted Scenes - About eight deleted scenes with an introduction by Director Kenny Ortega who mentioned it was done because of pacing and how difficult it was to gash some of these parts.

    * Bloopers - These are not the same bloopers shown at the extinguish credits, these are totally different.

    * Enlighten Along with the Movie - By enabling the hiss along subtitles, you can ogle clear songs and order to them.

    * Night of Nights - A featurette on the prom and having to prepare for the number and learn the choreography.

    * It’s All in the Dress - Creating the dream prom and the ideas on the prom dresses for the actresses.

    * Table of Contents - Similar to a year book, this allotment features photos and you can skip pages but also access sure special features and Easter Eggs. You can go to previous or next page via remote, if you press up on each page with your remote and choose on the photos for each page, you either can access a special feature (that is also listed on the special feature allotment) or win a East High Wildcats claw. These claws are hidden short video segments featuring behind-the-scenes footage not featured in the special features portion. The hidden claws can be found on the following pages and you can access the following Easter Eggs:Page 2 - Crazy improv segment

Page 3- Tiara vs. Sharpay segment

    Page 4 - Choreography segment

Page 5 - Basketball rig triggering

Page 6 - Basketball dance choreography

Page 8 - Two Easter Eggs (prom advice from the cast and Ashley Tisdale and Chris Warren choreography)

Page 12 - Two Easter Eggs (graduation dancing scenes)

    Page 13 - Ashley Tisdale/Sharpay easter egg

    JUDGMENT CALL:

Overall, I was quite impressed with this Blu-ray disc releae of “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”. On the extended version of the film, I was quite amazed by the production values from the stage, space and costume obtain, the cinematography, the lighting and the Blu-ray disc transfer of the film and seeing how attractive and shining the recount quality was and how certain and live the music sounds, fans of the film and have a Blu-ray player are truly in for a treat.

And to celebrate the “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment included the extended version on DVD and a digital copy disc as well.

And the number of special features and Easter Eggs were also another certain of the Deluxe Extended Edition.

If you enjoyed the previous two “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” films, one thing you felt when watching those films are “Disney” musicals. Something you expected to peep on the Disney Channel. With “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”, because of the high production value, the film really looked extremely well and after watching the special features, you learn that the cast really had to go all out in learning the choreography and with this film being the cast’s final film together, they went all out.

Now, how did I feel about the music in this film? I assume with every “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” that I’ve watched, there were always numbers that I enjoyed and numbers that tend to stick in your mind. But I have to say that this third film, the music was quite solid. Also, I deem that the cast felt more at ease and were noteworthy more comfortable with their surroundings and were not as stiff in the choreography. The songs were sung well, the choreography was huge!

But thanks to the higher budget and better production quality, I fill that director Kenny Ortega had worthy more freedom and again, with this being the final film for the main cast, everyone gave their best and it showed!

A extraordinary Blu-ray release and a must-own for “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” fans!

Very cute movie for elementary-early middle school-aged children. I employ it in my 6th grade science class as a fun intention to wrap up our environmental studies unit.
